About BMI

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category.

However, BMI does not measure body fat directly, so it should be used as a screening tool rather than a diagnostic of body fatness.

BMI Limitations

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations:

  • May overestimate body fat in athletes
  • May underestimate body fat in older persons
  • Does not account for muscle mass or distribution of fat
